Flintridge Background

A 25-year record of service to our local community

Flintridge Center has a long history of working to improve the quality of life for children, youth and families in Northwest Pasadena and Altadena—a commitment that dates back to beginnings of the Flintridge Foundation.

The Flintridge Foundation was created in 1985 through the estates of Francis and Louisa Moseley. The Moseleys lived in Southern California, residing in Pasadena and La Cañada-Flintridge. Their four children became the founding directors. By 1994, the then-expanded board, which included community members, had developed four key philanthropic programs—Conservation, Theatre, Visual Arts and Community Services, which focused on supporting local community organizations.

The Community Services program was started in 1993 at the request of nonprofit leaders for specialized training to build their management and fundraising skills. Flintridge began offering educational programming to help local organizations become more effective and sustainable and launched the Philanthropy Resource Library to serve as an informational hub for the area’s nonprofits.

Since then, the Community Services program has provided high quality, responsive capacity building services and educational resources for many hundreds of nonprofit organizations, with a particular focus on strengthening those serving children, youth and families in Northwest Pasadena and Altadena. In tandem with these services, Flintridge has taken an active role in bringing diverse stakeholders together to tackle the community’s most pressing challenges. We have initiated and supported successful partnerships addressing critical disparities that impact the residents of Northwest Pasadena and Altadena. These initiatives focus on education, neighborhood safety and access to comprehensive wraparound services.

By design, Flintridge Foundation concluded its grantmaking programs in 2007 and expended the majority of its assets. A new entity, Flintridge Operating Foundation, was formed to continue Flintridge’s services to benefit the communities of Northwest Pasadena and Altadena. Over the years, Flintridge distributed $19.7 million in grants in a tri-state region (including locally) and provided $8.9 million in charitable services to benefit the Pasadena/Altadena area through the Community Services program.

In 2010, we changed our name to Flintridge Center and revised our mission statement to more closely align them with the work that we are doing.

Flintridge Center is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our tax I.D. is 26-1559274.
