Flintridge Operating Foundation has worked to improve the lives of children, youth and families in Northwest Pasadena/Altadena since 1986 (formerly as the Flintridge Foundation).
Throughout its history, the Foundation has taken a place-based approach to philanthropy. It was at the request of local nonprofit leaders that Flintridge launched the Community Services program in 1993. The program has provided high-quality, responsive capacity building services and educational resources for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations with a focus on those serving children, youth and families. In tandem with these services, Flintridge has been strongly committed to community engagement. It has supported and encouraged collaborative efforts to address community needs by bringing diverse stakeholders together and facilitating partnerships.
Northwest Pasadena and Altadena are neighborhoods of concentrated poverty located on the outskirts of Pasadena. Here, residents struggle with high rates of unemployment, low educational achievement, gang activity and a lack of affordable housing. An assessment of the community’s unmet needs in 2007 revealed that the population—primarily African American and Latino families—face continuing, critical quality-of-life disparities in the areas of education, neighborhood safety, and access to comprehensive wraparound services.
As the result of an intensive strategic planning process, Flintridge converted from a family foundation and became an operating foundation in 2008. This new structure enables Flintridge to concentrate more deeply on direct services to benefit the communities where the Foundation’s endowment was created and where it is headquartered. The philanthropic resources are focused on tackling the issues of inequity impacting children, youth and families in Northwest Pasadena/Altadena and on mobilizing cross-sector support for positive and lasting social change.
Guided by the holistic perspective embodied in the motto "it takes a village to raise a child," Flintridge works in collaboration with community partners and builds on local strengths. Our goal is to create a healthy, inclusive and supportive community where families flourish and children and youth reach their full potential.
Flintridge Foundation, a private family foundation, was created in 1985 through the estates of Francis and Louisa Moseley. The Moseleys lived in Southern California, residing in Pasadena and La Cañada-Flintridge. Their four children became the founding directors and created the Foundation’s four program areas—Community Services, Conservation, Theatre and Visual Arts. Over the Foundation’s 20+ year lifetime, its philanthropic activities and grants totaled more than $23 million.
