How You Can Help
Flintridge Become a Mentor

Adult volunteer mentors are needed on an ongoing basis for students who struggle with low academic performance, emotional distress or behavioral issues.

At Washington Middle School, mentoring opportunities are available with YWCA-Pasadena Foothill Valley and Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters. At John Muir High School, mentoring opportunities are available through the Pasadena Mentoring Partners collaboration. We will be happy to refer you to a mentoring program that fits your interests.
    • A mentor must commit to meet regularly with the student for a minimum of five hours per month for at least 12 months.
    • Meetings take place at a mutually convenient location.
    • All mentors must go through a screening process that includes an application, intake procedures, background check and a program orientation.
    • Mentors receive ongoing support by the mentoring agency overseeing the match.

Mentor Training

Young boyAll mentors must attend Flintridge Center’s two-hour training, The Basics of Mentoring, prior to being matched with a student. These trainings are held monthly and cover basic program guidelines and safety issues, including mandatory reporting and communication/relationship skills. Please see our Calendar of Events for dates and times.

In addition, Flintridge Center coordinates a series of workshops throughout the year to build the skills of mentors and mentoring agencies. Mentors are expected to attend a minimum of eight additional hours of training per year.

If you would like to make a significant contribution to the life of a young person and are interested in serving as a mentor, please contact Ricky Pickens at (626) 449-0839, ext.115.Mentor and youth
