What We Do

skillz summer school

SKILLZ Summer School is a free learning experience for teens at risk of dropping out of school. Coordinated by Flintridge Center, SKILLZ is hosted on the beautiful Lake Avenue Church campus for five weeks each summer. The goal of the program is to provide a safe, nurturing alternative for youth during the summer, while reducing drop-out rates and increasing graduation rates. SKILLZ provides students entering 7th grade with courses designed to build their academic competence and workshops to provide valuable life skills. Coordinated by Flintridge, credentialed PUSD instructors teach academic classes, and local high school and college students provide one-on-one assistance. Day One coordinates evidence-based life skills workshops to empower students to deal with challenges such as dating violence, goal setting, and conflict resolution.

We work in an environment of love, support, understanding, and high expectations. Our youth work in small groups with instructors and tutors that care about them and their success, helping them grasp subjects they couldn't in school. In addition to the classroom courses, we match students with after-school programs, host a resource fair, provide free meals, and have social workers on site to support students' emotional needs.

Spearheaded by Flintridge Center, in collaboration with Day One, Lake Avenue Community Foundation, Lake Avenue Church and Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD), the five-week program has served more than 500 students to date.
