A Second Chance At Loving Life

The Apprenticeship Preparation Program readies community members for much more than just finding a job. In addition to classroom instruction in the construction trades and hands-on experience with tools, participants engage in a weekly life skills session facilitated by Skipp Townsend and Shanae Polk from the 2nd Call. These sessions cover topics such as the origin of self-esteem, how family dynamics can impact your life, and how to react to challenges without making bad decisions. Skipp makes a special effort to give every person in the room a voice, starting each session with participants talking about how they’re feeling and making time for everyone to discuss struggles they’ve faced in their lives.
The life skills course helps APP participants develop emotional strength, compassion for others, and confidence in themselves — these make all the difference in successful reintegration back into the community.
