Congressional Nonprofit of the Year 2024
Flintridge Center is honored to announce that the organization was selected as Nonprofit of the Year for Congresswoman Judy Chu’s Congressional Leadership Awards. These awards honor the outstanding leaders, organizations, and community members of Rep. Chu’s 28th Congressional District.
At the award ceremony this weekend, Congresswoman Chu shared that, “The Flintridge Center has dedicated itself to effectively helping those that are many times forgotten by the rest of society. They’ve evolved into a powerhouse of community support, providing trauma-informed care to the formerly incarcerated in a welcoming and safe environment.”
Congresswoman Chu highlighted the effectiveness of Flintridge’s services for youth, families, as well as adults coming home from incarceration. “What truly distinguishes the Flintridge Center is their innovation and responsiveness to the community,” she said.
Flintridge Center’s Executive Director, Josh McCurry, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. He shared that, on the occasion of receiving this honor, he thinks of the resilience of the community members that come through Flintridge Center’s doors. “I think of one of our Youth of Promise, who came to us in 6th grade after his father was incarcerated. Today, he attends Pasadena City College as part of their CORE program for system impacted students,” McCurry said. “I think of one of our adult constituents, who came to us two years ago, unhoused, and facing re-incarceration. He now lives in his own apartment in Pasadena and his pending criminal charges were dismissed.”
Congresswoman Chu also spoke about Flintridge’s near 40-year legacy, sharing that our work as it exists today was born out of deep commitment to helping those impacted by the criminal justice system. McCurry echoed this sentiment: “We [Flintridge Center] are committed to creating a community for young people to thrive and reach their highest potential, a community where incarceration is not used a tool of oppression; but rather hope and opportunity are the instruments of change”.
Flintridge recognize that this work is not done in isolation, but in close partnership with our partner organizations – we share this award with them. The organization is humbled to be among the community leaders who have received this award, and grateful to Congresswoman Chu for sharing Flintridge Center’s vision. Flintridge is eager to continue working steadfastly with our community, our partner organizations, and our leaders for the people of the 28th Congressional District.
