Youth of Promise Goes Back to School

There were plenty of smiles, full bellies, and new friends at our annual Youth of Promise Back to School BBQ last week. With YOP Program Assistant J.D. on the grill cooking up links and patties, we had plenty of food to go around. It was exciting for youth who had not seen each other all summer to come with their families and catch up, while parents got to do the same.

During dinner, long-time YOP staff members Janet and Lisa introduced the newest addition to the team, Deon Shorter. Deon will be working as the newest case manager for YOP, and everyone is excited to have him on the team. Deon was raised in Pasadena and graduated from John Muir High School. He previously worked as a team leader for The City Teen Center in Salinas, Kansas where he mentored male high school students to promote healthy life skills. We also introduced our new YOP interns Karina and Sylvia, who will be a great help in the upcoming school year.

This year YOP is expected to have more youth than ever, and we are already revving up for the new field trips, programs, tutoring, and mentor-matching to come. As always, we are looking forward to another semester where we can support our youth and make sure they all receive the attention and individualized care that will enable them to succeed in school and beyond.
