J.D. is a Pasadena native who grew up in various parts of the Northwest and attended Pasadena public schools. He found himself getting into trouble on a consistent basis, not ever really caring about where he was headed. At the age of seventeen he got into trouble, was charged as an adult, and spent 10 years in prison. Before being released he had a decision to make: walk straight, or end up right back. So J.D. began a journey of giving back to the community in a positive and constructive way. About a year after his release, he was introduced to Flintridge Center. He completed the Apprenticeship Preparation Program and joined the Local 300 Laborers union. While working he continued to talk to and mentor youth in the community with the hopes that someone would give him an opportunity to work with the youth. He remembered when no one was there for him as a youth and could see and feel those same feelings in some of the youth growing up in the same environment. J.D. found the opportunity he was looking for in Flintridge Center's Youth of Promise program. J.D. now serves as the YOP Program Assistant, transporting youth to and from program events, supervising activities, and acting as a positive role model. J.D. says, "Everything I've been through has brought me here and prepared me for this work of positively affecting lives."
